BACLOFEN sold under the brand name Lioresal among others, is a medication used to treat spasticity. It is used as a central nervous system depressant and skeletal muscle relaxant. It is also used in topical creams to help with pain.
Baclofen is a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) agonist used as a skeletal muscle relaxant. It is known to be particularly useful in treating muscle spasticity associated with spinal cord injury. This drug has recently been studied for the management of alcohol withdrawal, however, a conclusion has not been reached regarding baclofen efficacy in this condition .
Treatment should always, (unless serious adverse effects occur), be gradually discontinued by successively reducing the dosage over a period of about 1-2 weeks. Anxiety and confusional state, delirium, hallucination, psychotic disorder, mania or paranoia, convulsion (status epilepticus), dyskinesia, tachycardia, hyperthermia, rhabdomyolysis and temporary aggravation of spasticity as a rebound phenomenon have been reportedwith abrupt withdrawal of baclofen, especially after long term medication. Baclofen is used to treat muscle symptoms; such as spasm, pain and stiffness; caused by multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, or other spinal cord disorders. It is given intrathecally (directly into the spinal cord) or orally (by mouth).
Baclofen is a prescription drug used to treat muscle spasms from multiple sclerosis and Huntington’s disease as well as spinal cord injuries and spinal cord diseases.
Baclofen comes in tablets of 10 and 20 milligrams (mg), and you’ll usually take an equally divided dose three times a day. Tablets have a score mark, which is an indented line down the middle, so you can cut them in half if necessary.
Your doctor may start you at a low dose and then gradually increase it as needed. The goal is to take the lowest effective dose.
A typical dose schedule is:
5 mg three times a day for the first three days;
10 mg three times a day for the next three days;
15 mg three times a day for the next three days;
20 mg three times a day for the next three days.
